What SSH version are you using? (SSH1 or SSH2?)
I tend to have problems with SSH2 on older ssh clients (mostly windows 
clients, and its more a case of not authenticating)
Another tip is to turn up the debugging on either/both machines to see 
what you get.
That is, start ssh(d) with -vvv to give you maximum verbosity.

KeepAlive doesn't keep the session alive, it just detects if the session 
is still active.
