I've used k3b to burn CDs with my DVD burner, and I didn't notice any problems. I'm using Ubuntu-Hoary.
Admittedly I haven't tried stuff thats built in to the gnome desktop. I like to verify the CDs/DVDs that I burn, and the gnome stuff won't do that. Ben.
