In thunderbird at the top of the window click on

edit->preferences

In the "General" section down the bottom tick "Custom .wav file" 

then click on "browse"... goto the wav file of choice  then when your happy you have the correct file click on "preview"...

Note sure were your wav files are try using locate .wav (make sure you have run updatedb as root first).

There is usually a pile of wav files under /usr/share/sounds.
