So, your friend is probably refering to the H-1B and E-3 visa scenario. Many years ago in the mists of time, Aussies wanting to work in the US had to have an H-1B visa (or a L1 or whatever, but let's ignore those edge cases). They're currently limited to 65,000 new people each year. Since we agreed to bomb Iraq, and sign onto the FTA, we can now use an E-3 visa, which has 10,500 places reserved just for Aussies a year. There were around 900 H-1Bs granted in Aussies in the year before the introduction of the E-3, so it's a big increase. This is why you're seeing companies like Microsoft and Google more actively recruit in this country. There are of course other differences in the visas as well...
