Thanks to all who replied and provided advice.
I took the plunge yesterday and purchased a BenQ A32e-V01 from TX Computing
in York St Sydney.
See http://www.benq.com.au/HomeShowProduct.asp?Prodid=432 for specs etc.
They kindly allowed me to boot Kanotix 2005.3 Lite Live CD and have a play
- Kanotix instantly found sound ( AC97), video (Intel), Touchpad
(Synaptic), DVDRW ( checked with K3b), etc.
Once home I connected it to my Lan, booted Kanotix LiveCD again, set the
Ethernet to DHCP and I was on the Net.
Can't test WiFi or Cardbus as I don't have Wireless access and I have XD
cards which are not supported, but I have a USB Pen-style card reader for
that and USB devices work - ie my 1gb thumb drive. During boot Kanotix
tries to locate a Wifi access point, so I guess Wifi works with Kanotix.
May not be the fastest ( Celeron 1.3) but it's more than adequate for me.
Now all I have to do is backup Win XP Home installation, resize the 2
partitions on the 60gb hdd and install Linux - either Kanotix or Kubuntu.
If anybody would like the lspci/modutils etc output, just ask.
By the way, the price was $1299 plus $130 to upgrade the 512k RAM ( 2x 256)
to 1gb ( 2x512). It comes with XP Home ( official pack) and various
multimedia apps.
