when while during the last 'make install' for 'Python Extras' I saw
the dreaded 'Kernel Panic' flash by, which
I assumed was transient.

While booting the next session I noted the message

Error inserting genrtc
(lib/modules/2.6.5-1-686/kernel/drivers/char/genrtc.ko): Device or
reesource busy

and also a message that the kernel could not access logfiles,
particularly syslog.

I have two kernels on the machine, 2..4* and 2.6.5-1-686 .. and have
unpacked but not yet compiled 2.6.14

Trying to boot the 2..4* kernel gives me a hung system, the last
messages being

Booting 2.6.5-1-686 hung with final messages

Tux login:

.. I then find I can login as user 'adam' but cannot find /home/adam,
nor does it recognize 'vi' or 'vim'

When I booted using Gentoo 'System Rescue CD-x86-0.2.12.iso' I had a
functioning root system but could not
remember quite how to mount the directory tree .. can someone point me
in the right direction ?.

Similarly with tomsrtbt ..

Booting from the 'Tux' boot floopy gave me a hung screen with the
message that it could not find syslog.

I'd be grateful for any constructive advice to get the system up again
. . allowing me to eventually compile / 'make install' 2.6.14

hi Adam
Try ls -al /usr/src
see if the linux link is pointing to the new 2.6.x kernel instead of the 2.4 kernel.
Gerald

Thanks Gerald.

My LILO looks like this
----------
Linux
linux-2.6.5
WinXP
----------
When booting from 'Linux' I get to a hung state with final message

INIT: Entering runlevel 5
Starting system log daemon: syslog

.. and there it hangs , meaning I cannot do 'ls -al /usr/src'

When booting from 2.6.5 everything looks normal until

RAMDISK: cramfs filesystem found at block 0
RAMDISK: Loading 4464 blocks [disk] into ram disk ... done
VFS: Mounted root (cramfs filesystem) readonly
Error -3 while decompressing !
c0356620C-1259960932->d7b93000(4096)
VFS: Cannot open root device "hdb5" or unknown-block (0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)

.. with the consequence that I writing this in WinXP (:-(

When I try the Gentoo System Rescue disk (not the latest, but it works),
it cannot find my directory tree

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /root% ls -al /usr/src
ls: /usr/scr: No such file or directory

.. and I can't quite work out how to mount it .. having read 'man mount'.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] /root% mount -t ext2 hdb1 /
mount: special device hdb1 does not exist

.. and so on, whatever I substitute for hdb1.

I thin the key is in the message when booting from the 2.6.5 kernel ..

"Please appand a correct "root=" boot option.

Can anyone advise how to proceed ?

I'm increasingly desperate to access material on the linux drive with
GNOME and all that goes with it, not wishing to rely on XP any longer than I have to
