After a long session where Gimp crashed and I haven't saved
I was reminded of my old ZX81 days where everyone lost work
and lost work and finally learned to save their work regularly.
With years of using stable applications (such as emacs) that
support auto-save (like emacs does) I've got out of the habit
of saving all the time.

I figured I had better switch on auto-save for Gimp as a
precaution against this happening in the future but I can't
find any auto-save option in the preferences. Searching
google seems to suggest that auto-save was considered at various
times but never implemented. Is there a trick to getting
it activated? Or it just doesn't work and you learn to live
with it?

For all I love Gimp, it still annoys me no end with its
quirks and crashes. It is a bit of a signature of open source
software that Gimp comes with a fully functional theme engine
and about a thousand filters but basic nuts and bolts stuff
like "save the data" is a low priority item.

Hopefully my last whinge of the year... :-)
