(re fc3 to fc4) I'd say just do it. After backing up of course. I note that something called Quantlib (http://quantlib.org) for financial quantitative analysis) is part of fc4 extras. Might help if you have a big brain. I'm not sure what open source apps if any use it. Though there are bindings for python ... and excel!
