Thanks to Michael and Billy USB stick now works. Laptop had dropped
about half its modules for no apparent reason. Fsck on USB stick doesnt
look healthy either but I am unsure of what I shuld get here.

lsmod on the laptop showed about half the modules that the desktop had.
Vfat was missing, so I loaded that. Still didnt mount USB stick. Went to
back up data but it was unable to burn a CD.
Nothing important that was not backed up so
Re installed ubuntu from CD
all the modules are back in lsmod, USB stick works, cd burning works
I wonder why the modules dropped out?
