I have VNC server running on a remote machine and I have it set up so that when I access it with either vnc viewer or HTML port 5800 (java app) I get my normal graphical desktop.

However, if I stupidly action the Logout from the desktop (not just closing the vnc viewer or HTML session), then I don't have the ability to log back in and all I get is a black screen, and the only way I can overcome it is to restart the vnc server on the remote machine.

What am I missing? Should I be running xdm, gdm or kdm, and if so how/where?
