thanks for all the explanations.

I guess I made a wrong choice of subject, shoul'd've called it 'how come I
managed to..';
at no time did I imply that I don't want to mkfs, I purely forgot to, and,
'as it worked', contined on my merry way, till I looked at 'how to do it'
and, realized I missed a step;

I've should've rtfm 1st and not after...
