I have need to set up Linux POS soft/hard ware for a customer.
I'm thinking SQL-Ledger for the software as it has POS, but I need a
Linux compat slip printer, barcode reader (probably k/b wedge would be
best), and cash drawer.
What experience is there out there and recommended suppliers for the h/w.
I just set up a POS system for a coffee shop using a postgresql backend
and Tinapos front end. The Database is run on Debian, while the front
end is run on Windows. The reason the front end is using windows is only
because of 2 things,
1) The touch screen we have is a nightmare to get going under linux (if
you didn't already have one you would just buy one that works out of the
box with Linux)
2) Full screen mode works on Windows but not linux (Its a java app, and
the linux jre doesn't support full screen mode)
If it wasn't for the touchscreen, it would have been an all Linux
affair, and I would just put up with maximising the window and hiding
the task bar instread of full screen mode.
Its by far the best FOSS POS system I have come accross.
As for the printer, the forums cover a number of printers, but again to
avoid headaches just buy the epson tm111.
For the printer, it doesn't matter whether you use windows or linux,
tinapos talks directly to the hardware, under linux though, it can be a
bit tricky setting up the java comm driver.
Cash draw and bar code reader support is also in TinaPOS.
Good luck
