I looked at the fairly spartan commandline options, and concluded that it was a pretty basic client. If only I'd kept reading. :-P My guess was that putty was doing some magical protocol negotiation automatically, that the other client neglects. The serial console stuff is kind of weird; they support one speed, 38400, and won't work at all with flow control.
