In that case, you're probably best off swapping them around. What Crossfire most eloquently said is true; it's a *lot* easier to set up a Linux machine with an ethernet modem than a USB-connected one.

You should be able to just plug it in, and configure the interface in Linux to get its IP address dynamically via DHCP.
