That's fine unless you happen to be using DRI, which the ati module usually does, the the fglrx module almost always does. In that case you also need to unload and reload appropriate kernel modules. I could have given a step by step list on how to do that, too, but I didn't. But I'm surprised you didn't give the actual correct thing to do - hit ctrl-d to exit single user mode.
