Hi Geoffrey,
it could be hardware fault.
check the serial cabling. use the working cable from one box on the other box.

May be not the right kind of question for here? but i am baffled

I have two machines side by side, both running Debian. Older machine
had RedHat at one stage.

Both configured with ppconfig. Both appear to have identical files,
except that one uses ttyS0 and the other ttyS1 for modem.

One connects without a problem. other cannot.
/var/log/messages gives identical output until "Serial connection established"

Then one has hangup SIGHUP
Occasionally it will go the next step to : Using ppp) / Connect pppO <--> ttyS1
and then hangup SIGHUP.

the winkinblinkin go through to the penultimate--last light no flicker.

History: it stopped working under RedHat also--which is one reason I
put Debian on it, to be able to compare the two machines. Not
essential, but I do like a backup, especially if I upgrade
Woody--afraid to do so in case it breaks :-(

Just do not know what to try next --

Geoffrey
