Hi Peter,
I'm using Centos 4.2 and VMware Beta and had a few initial weird
problems including what you are having.
things like rebooting, copying files via samba would stop mid way and
the volume would be unmounted, would not let me remount it without a
reboot of the host operating system etc.
In the end I completely trashed the setup and REFORMATTED the entire
raid array and started again.
This fixed the problem. There was something weird in the partition or
the way ext3 was handling things - don't know exactly - but blowing it
all away and reformatting it did the trick.
I know it's drastic but it fixed all the weird problems I had.
It was an Intel dual xeon server with sata raid 5.
One volume for the operating system and another for the VMs. Now all is
pretty sweet.
HTH
