The "Authority" is a logical concept which can be a person, a book, a folk-story or a group of people. In this particular context your three person "collective" is the authority. Stating, "we say so" does not actually bring any evidence to the table. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appeal_to_authority : > ipse dixit (Latin: he himself said it, > where an unsupported assertion depends on the asserter's credibility) Yes I do realise that using Wikipedia as a reference is in itself an argument by authority but on an issue regarding the definition of a phrase there isn't much else to measure other than common usage and I believe that Wikipedia's collective editing does at least manage to provide consensus on the definition of a phrase. Since you ignored all of my actual evidence and presented none of your own, an empiricist such as myself can't take this much further. You might notice that I responded to your ad hominem (calling me a Troll) with one of the same (calling you self-centered). Hopefully you also appreciated the self-referential subtlety that I was both answering your question, and using your original question itself as evidence of the sort of person who would resort to name-calling rather than providing evidence for their side of the argument. - Tel -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iQIVAwUBRFSvdMfOVl0KFTApAQI/OQ/6AgCzLgqE5aHjWqbCVKKWG0q4cbJMRkZJ OZqj6oOSd7xfAr/eTzZ6l5DzenoC+HTbxSc2C6wi7lxvnOL0T07ClKfuaB76iSR8 dxiQ2INO/uTkDHdmsJ+F2IyOvtMWNwibenfqIEXu8EAfDz8IklndapcnghrJD//7 nD3Z84JJLL+Yh2kNPjj9FLQlOIfmMEBnzbCbVhLrv5SVgkydS6NzOzR2qwIh7Mnn w8b8mWloXrrm6Py26WVos36aznVC+06kpcwf3rkVKoZDGrIcaoYHiXLXGvootn5m WfmAqFdWkpnF1oHMZ9gX20QLbZTcW2gZhGDdYmiF2jlUIItHcPSaFmsXRy+8w19Y 6XZ95gYCklDy4S70a7m1qpVwc2pklHjPHu4gyhtHeTiAM1ybALud6+vfdWG95k7l JvVOEnM2hGJdsb5mgN+rrFDyfxo0Hfgts5MZwrqGnLPmevEvlvf8fpuk/OpopUha EfxsoD7CYh9m5tjEXL4SlDHpvNIOWBdZWQxr73XzMH7+d/PxpxaFSga03WFfLZLp zMVoblWeBS1n9UB53eKOss8mTBuINVejLwsx/LQtakY8C2DJFiCc0uQDn5n1Ewr4 Y7zt/JLp0t12wGjKxchowQLlQCBssL/3Fkc/V+9LEQP3Ta8Biz3wcNblSIgTG8sC mfDpKZ0HTZk= =W/Gu -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
