install pretending to use a modem

then edit the the firewalls config files manually.

its a pain, but oh well.

i have the same fiddle with a usb ethernet adapter and a pcmcia
adapter (yes a laptop firewall. its convenient and has a battery)

the installed would not put pcmcia as local ethernet and usb
as wan. so i gave up and edited the config files by hand.

you can edit the files and not add anything that breaks things,
just allows you to work around these sorts of things.

i can download updates as normal etc.
