Not sure if these are really relevant:
editors: avidemux(2), Not brillant, but it has its uses.
kdenlive (with piave backend)
tools: transcode, mplayer for changing video format to one that your
particular editor prefers. A lot of editing software only handles DV, so the
ability to change formats is very useful.
What about video4linux? Particularly in regard to capturing analogue forms of
video for editing/streaming.
