Ive jumped in here without knowing the history of this thread,so forgive
me if I am repeating already covered ground.
I got a laptops modem to work recently by using slmodemd.
Basically I installed Ubuntu Dapper, enabled universe and multiverse then
just did

sudo apt-get install sl-modem-daemon

Then dialed my mobile to make sure it worked. It did, and all the
villagers were happy and had a feast in my honour.

Im not suggesting you move to Ubuntu (dont know what distro you are
using anyway!) but my point is, if you are that desperate to get it
going, try using a pretested and packaged version. I dont know where to
find these packages for other distro's though, so that is your homework
if you prefer not to use Ubuntu. After apt-getting the package, the
modem could just simply be configured in
System-Administration-networking, and was a piece of cake!

Food for thought
