Hi
A last request for help:

a) I want to configure my soundcards.
   They are there:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# lspci |grep audio
0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) 0000:02:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! EMU10k1 (rev 08)

I googled lots. Many egs of howto make autodetection work etc etc.
What I want is the EMU101 as dsp and 8201 as dsp1, NOT the other way round.

System -> Administration -> Device Manager -> Sound Cards achieves nothing!

Join the club. I've been working on this since Hoary Hedgehog. I managed to work out a way to do it with Hoary. Then Breezy came out with the default sound card option which only really half worked. It made the audio come out the right card, but the mute and volume buttons on the multimedia keyboard didn't control the default card, all the others (play, stop, etc) worked fine because they were card unrelated. Now Dapper doesn't keep the setting so I'm thinking about going back to the Hoary way of doing things and hardwiring the setting. Problem is of course, I can't quite remember how I did it, but here goes a list of things to tweak the memory/help the googling which may or may not have been relevant:

- it involved some changes to /etc/asound.conf
- it also involved changes to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, and changing the index the driver modules grabbed, as well as the order - something like options snd-intel8x0m index=-2

Theoretically udev should be able to be used to reverse the dev names the cards get but I couldn't get that working, but I probably didn't have the right udev rules defined.

HTH
