Worked it out.  It's weird.

Spamassassin sees fi.mm in a mail message and tries to look it up.

fi.mm is not a valid domain name (but that doesn't explain the general
screwiness in the DNS servers for .mm), it's the name of a variable in
a patch set in the Linux kernel mailing list.  So every time an email
comes in mentioning the variable, a lookup gets done.

Can anyone give me a cluestick as to how to stop spamassassin doing
this?  In general it does a reasonable job of dropping the thousands
of spams I get; but every now and then ..... grrrr
