Actually http://bugs.debian.org/366373 has some updates, in particular a patch. However, applying that patch (installing 14MB of build dependencies) and reinstalling gives the same error. Or, I think it does, I find it hard to tell what dpkg-buildpackage is doing when it applies all the patches over the top of the directory I think I'm meant to edit myself.
