Well, it should have been obvious to me earlier :)

In the winders version the window automatically arranges itself according to the setting you choose in:

tools > options > view > detail area

By manually adjusting the window size, I get rid of the broken image on the top and right hand side.

When start GE, only the South Pole is viewable. I then click on the 'maximise' button (top right of screen), which brings the whole planet into view, then the 'restore' button (which replaces the 'maximise' button when you maximise :)). If I then manually adjust the window, it's all fine and there is no fragmented imagery around the viewing window.

Apols for the step-by-step, but I thought it might help out anyone who's been having the same problem.

Works for me on FC5 on a Toshiba lappy, but the screen is a bit messed up around the edges, esp the top and right sides

Totally borked.  Segfaults immediately for me on Dapper.  Only the
crashdump functionality works - and even that's half broken: it can't
