Hi Glen. Thank you for your reply.
It assumes a level of understanding in these matters which I,
unfortunately, don't have. However, since I created a working xorg.conf
file so recently, it seems to me that if I butcher your instructions, I
can still scramble back to the situation I'd achieved then, so I'd like
to keep going with this.
If I may, I'd like to explain the point to which I've been able to get
with your instructions.
I had been using a resolution of 1024x768, although the monitor's native
resolution was said to be 1280x1024. (At 1024x768, the size of text on
the screen was easily legible to me.) I had not set a DisplaySize in the
Monitor section of my xorg.conf file.
I switched the monitor's resolution to the native one and then ran
xdpyinfo. It showed that the native resolution equated to 342x271 mm,
with a dpi of 95x96. I then added a DisplaySize entry of 342x271 to my
xorg.conf file and rebooted. After a reboot, I ran xdpyinfo again and it
showed dimensions of 342x274, with a dpi of 95x95. I don't know why the
xorg.conf entry says "271" when the xdpyinfo entry says "274", but,
however that may be, I now have a dpi with two equal values, 95x95,
which I gather is what's wanted.
That much achieved, the next question is how to increase the size of
such things as text and icons. As things stand now, I have great
difficulty reading text on the screen.
I went to /etc/X11/fs/config and found the default-resolutions entry.
Mine says : "default-resolutions = 75,75,100,100". I don't know whether
I'm to edit that line, given my dpi of 95x95, or, if so, how.
I also ran rpm -q -a | grep font | grep dpi, which in my case returned:
fonts-xorg-100dpi-6.8.2-0.FC3.1
fonts-xorg-75dpi-6.8.2-0.FC3.1
Since I already have the 100dpi package installed, do I need to install
any other package? If not, what do I do now to increase the size of
text across all my applications?
Best wishes,
Leslie
