So, you're in spatial mode. There's a couple of things you can do:

 * Hold shift while opening folders - same keybinding as Mac OS Classic's
   Finder (the most popular spatial file manager)

 * Switch to browse mode in Edit > Preferences (under View, "Always open in
   browser windows")
