Ken,

Are you sure you have the "openssh-server" package installed on Machine 1? Iit isn't installed in Dapper by default - you may have forgotten to do this :-)

You might need to check that the /etc/init.d/sshd (or whatever it is called) is run at bootup if you have inadvertantly disabled it.

To turn off the firewall (assuming that your home network is protected from the outside world by another firewall) you need to set your filters to accept and flush at rules. (Basically run this as sudo  - http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.net/scripts/rc.flush-iptables.txt )

If this works you might then want to create the appropriate ACCEPT rule for iptables.

I am trying to copy a file from one machine to another on a home Lan.
Using scp I get connection refused on port 22. One machine working
Dapper, turning on firewall and and specifically opening port 22 and
allowing other machine, or anyone and also turning off firewall all give
same result, connection refused on port 22 when try scp or ssh from
machine 2.
On machine with non working X how do I open port 22 from the command
line? Or what will work on the GUI enabled machine.
