First things is that upgrading Hoary straight to Dapper was always
going to be a disaster, you should have followed hoary --> breezy -->
dapper as it was intended.
If you just want to backup and reinstall, then just use the Dapper
install disk (or any previous live cd), backup what you want , then re
install. Should all be easy and straight forward.
