I had the same problem. When I had a close look I found that the KVM has
a USB port (previously unnoticed/unused - I had it plugged into PS2).

The USB works much more nicely, and now the only problem is that the
wheel won't work immediately after switching. At some undetermined time
later it suddenly mysteriously starts to work again. It's working at the
moment, but wasn't this morning ;-)

In the past I solved the same problem by editing /etc/modules with

psmouse proto=bare

but this no longer works.
