Pretty much most serial modems will suffice.
I have also found that plenty of Linmodems work too
(winmodems/softmodems), if you have one laying around, and its not a
connexant chip, there is a good chance it will work with little fuss.
I know this goes against what people have been saying for years, but
over the last 6 months I have had a great deal of success with winmodems
under Ubuntu, just a quick apt-get if its a lucent or intel chip, and
you are away and running. I have installed linux on a number of laptops
for friends and so far all the inbuilt modems were easy to get going,
maybe I was just lucky!
Its not usually very hard to find softmodems, so you should not have to
spend anything at all.
Also, most external modems will work fine, but there are couple of
gotcha one's out there, for example the low end cheap netcomm will not
work, it is actually an external softmodem that I could not get going,
but their more expensive version is fine, and actually has linux listed
on the box as a compatible OS.
Good luck
