As far as I know the drive is/was mounted/umounted ok.

I think I may have found my own solution. I've changed architectures from i386 to sun. I don't know if that would cause these problems but it might. Sun require the 3rd partition to be 'whole of disk' The other thing that crossed my mind is the disk would have a Dos signature rather than Sun.

However, the other directories and files are accessable and useable. Any other ideas?

I assume the umount and  mount commands were completed correctly?
