You might want to have a look at examples of reflectors such as this

I made one a while a go (just to try) and it did give extra gain (though I found repositioning my AP more robust)

Some of the APs do allow you to substitute the built in antennas for external ones, but just remember they are designed for diverse antennas adjacent to each other rather than two spread a long way apart. (You end up with "ghosting" because of speed-of-light issues if the diverse antennas are too far apart)
