Hi James and Peter
Thanks for the replies. I've been slow answering because my posts over
the weekend were all bounced and I was not receiving any mail from Slug.
When I said that the pc was "headless" I meant that it had no monitor
(or mouse or keyboard) attached and was accessed via my home LAN -
excuse me if the terminology was incorrect.
All I want to use on the PC is StreamTuner, my DVB-T card for TV out via
Kaffeine to Analogue TV (attached to the PC), playing DVD movies and
music CD's ( either via the DVD-R drive or from .iso's ripped to hard
drive). The PC is also connected directly to my Stereo.
Since my earlier posts I have achieved TV-Out via SVideo-out from my
Nvidea card to my Analogue TV. ( I just selected a different svideo
input on the TV - it has 2)
In my earlier posts I was confusing the SVideo socket of the Avermedia
Aver 771 DVB-T card with SVideo-out whereas it's actually SVideo-in,
hence the remarks re not needing a video card.
I have been remotely accessing that PC via NX, which gives me a virtual
desktop, not the desktop showing on the TV ( or the pc).
When I plugged a mouse into the pc I had interaction with the desktop on
the TV, therefore I believe that I must have achieved a Cloned desktop
in my Xorg.conf.
I have sinced determined that I would be able to remotely access the
actual desktop (desktop :0) using X11vnc or the latest version of vnc (
ver 4) (which is not as far as I know available in the Ubuntu
repositories).
What I now apparently need to do to get X11vnc working is to open the
appropriate port(s) in my Modem-Router setup. Have done this in the past
( a long time ago) on my old modem-router but have forgotten the steps.
Will have to find my notes as I also have to do the same for FTP to be
able to access my WebSpace at my ISP.
James, I have tried MythTV, Knoppmyth and MythDora, and only managed to
get MythDora working, and even the mythTV froze/died regularly. MythTV
is actually overkill for my needs at this time.
Peter, thanks for the link to synergy, but as it is for "multiple
computers ---------, each with its own display" it is not suitable for
my setup, as I only have a single monitor, and krfb ( included in
Kubuntu) requires setting up "invitations". Up until now, I have found
NX much more suitable and much easier for accessing pc's on my home LAN.
I also use "fish" in Konqueror for transferring files.
Thanks again
Bill
