there appear to be two basic ways of sending/receiving text messages

1. nokia phone - communicating directly with the phone
eg. http://www.embedtronics.com/nokia/fbus.html
why i cant do this yet - i have a nokia 1600 and i am having
difficulty finding the right cable which fits UNDER the battery, also
my phone has 6 PADS not 4 as described on the website, im not quite
comfortable constructing a cable accurate enough to conduct with the
tiny pads (see above website). 2. i am considering buying another
phone where a serial cable is more readily available however
communicating with my 1600 would be the cheapest/easiest

2. using a gprs modem. seems like the "better" way but im not to aware
of gprs modems that accept AT commands through a serial port. (or too
familiar with gprs modems in general)
why i cant do this yet - gprs modems seem expensive ($300+ new) and im
not sure if i could actually get it to work as described below if i
went ahead and purchased it !! i'd prefer a cheaper solution, maybe if
i knew what i was looking for i could find something on ebay once i
knew what was easy to communicate with - basically im worried about
spending the money and not even getting the modem to send/receive
eg. http://www.developershome.com/sms/howToReceiveSMSUsingPC.asp

and .. experience with sending a fax eg. a jpg created with a
scripting language.
i'd like to do both with perl or a similar scripting language eg php.
i'd love my server to send me a fax if it's having problems but it's
mostly for 'kicks'

im down from melbourne for the weekend, including today (friday) and
monday. so ideally i'd love to meet some people tonight with some
experience doing the above.

anyone want to share their experiences ?

if you can help feel free to email mformatt at gmail dot com or
call/txt my mobile 0402/312/212
