Check out Installix (not sure URL) which installs a bunch of "restricted 
content" stuff, so you get behaviour more like you're used to.  
Everything seems to work after that: PDF inside browser, Java applets, 
video streams on SMH and BBC sites and the like.

Note: RMS will not like you for doing this.
