If you use gnome I believe if you go to the fonts:/// location you can drag and drop fonts from a File Manager window (same as copying them to ~/.fonts)

For truetype fonts, I usually just put them in ~/.fonts. The application
will (usually) need a restart to see it after that.

If you want the whole system to use the font(s), /usr/share/fonts is
usually the place.
