Thanks for your interest.

I sorted it thanks to Hamish Grieg. The system was fine but the inittab had
all the tty's hashed out.

It must have been something I did a while ago. The interesting thing is why
it didn't present a problem earlier.

If you can ssh into the machine then it means that the sshd daemon was
startted successfully.
Which brings the question of "what do you define as "hung"?
Maybe all that happens is that you don't get a login prompt. Have you
tried
other virtual consoles (ALT-F<n>)? When you ssh into the machine - can you
see getty or X server processes? What other processes do you see and what
do
you find in the log files (/var/log/...)?

And BTW - what distro is it? What hardware and what did you change just
before it started "hanging"?
