G'day all,

Distro/kernel: Debian GNU/Linux 2.6.8-3-k7-smp

I'm writing backups to a directory mounted using smb, with tar - tar clpsvzf myfilename.tar.gz --atime-preserve --same-owner /

It seems to be stopping after 2GB, and it isn't apparent as to what is
causing the problem.

Any suggestions as to either diagnosing this or to as what may be the
problem?

Sounds like you've hit the maximum file size on the destination filesystem. What is the destination filesystem - FAT, FAT32, NTFS, ...?
