As a barely computer literate user I have not found anything that windows is useful for, that can't be done in Linux, since 1993. 1. For those who like Nero there is a version of Nero(haven't used it but was given it once) for Linux but K3b is as good as anything if you need that type of interface. The burner that loads with Ubuntu works perfectly well. 2. Open Office is really easy to use and has the ability to read and write MS files 3. vlc and mplayer do all the video/DVD/audio stuff - as do a number of other programs
4. the GIMP is no more complicated than Photoshop and is improving daily.
5. Firefox/Thunderbird/Epiphany etc. cover the net better than anything I have tried on windows especially since flash 9 for Linux arrived. 6. There are lots of other things out there including many of the new flashy games that do come in a Linux version but most important of all are the two facts that follow: Linux has more users than any other OS since China introduced it into their schools and if it can't be done on a 'nix platform then it probably is not worth doing anyway!

As a non technical user, who has managed to teach myself linux, then done 4 TAFE courses of 4 hours per week X 18 weeks each over the past year, and a whole lot of reading and is now attempting to support a very non technical partner, there will be many hurdles than do not just work. Currently Lisa's cd burning does not work, but mine does; edgy, gnomebaker; no idea why; so she has dual booted back to windoze cause it does what she needs. Dual booting is not a big issue and give a way out. I started using linux to avoid some endless upgrade requirements, and email viruses which it has been good for. I currently dont use windoze, but Lisa needs it every now and then.
