It probably depends on what you are doing. I have just used Lyx to
layout and typeset a cook book, <begin shameless plug> "The Restless
Minestrone" </shameless plug>, and it did a terrific job. I used Lyx
because I was having some of the typing done by people who would have
run a mile if they had seen a LaTeX tag. When they had finished the
basic layout stuff, I added a few LaTeX finishing touches. It was a
very smooth operation.

Having said that, it would have been smoother to do in pure LaTeX.
