When I had to change some settings for a friend, I used the VNC stuff.
That seemed to make it easy.

It strikes me that Sonia could also start a "real Gnome session" like this:

 % ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 [enter passwords etc]
 remote_machine % gnome-session &

The only thing that I've noticed with this setup is that it can actually hijack your current session.

VNC would probably be the easiest, though.
