I've also found that changing locale to en_GB has no effect on apt-get update; only LANG= works. Is this a bug or a PEBKAC? On a related issue, what's the canonical way of changing a locale on a machine? Using the login screen, or editing /etc/environment and/or /etc/default/locale? -- Sonia Hamilton.
