No.  dom0 quite happily has network access, as shown in the capture of 
ifconfig.

Hmmm could be.  Might trash it and debootstrap it again.  My dom0 is on 
a static but DHCP-assigned IP.  I'm expecting the domU to get a 
dyanamic (for now) DHCP lease on boot-up.  My experience with this kinda 
thing is mostly with VMware, and it works just fine like that on a 
bridged interface.

Will try trashing it and start again.  If that doesn't work, I'll try 
debootstrapping Debian in instead of Ubuntu, to at least rule that out.
