There should be no problems at all installing the card as it should be detected and used immediately but make sure that you download "envy" as a deb/rpm first and run it from the command line - without X running - on your first reboot after installing the card and making sure your internet connection is up and running. "envy" is a script that goes and gets the nvidia proprietary drivers and installs them for you. That is assuming that you want 3D etc. If not, you can settle for the open source ones.

Hi all,

Well, it looks like I may be able to get myself a new video card for my desktop. I'm going to get an Nvidia card.

I have on-board video and haven't previously installed a vid card into a machine that already had an on-board vid card so am seeking some advice.

Do I have to disable the on-board card in the BIOS or will this occur automatically?

The motherboard is a GA-81865GVMK-775.

I've installed sound cards etc before, but not a vid card and so naturally am seeking advice *before* I do anything.

Any assistance, referrals or advice will be most appreciated.

Regards,

Patrick
