Consumer grade DSL services in Australia are notoriously unreliable.

It depends on the area and line quality. Plus how fair you might be from the exchange. The house I am currently renting is like 5.5km from the exchange by cable length and lets just say its been painfull.

Although the house we just sold down the road, the Cisco 837 would stay connected for weeks at a time without drop outs on consumer grade DSL service.
