Try running "xev" (without quotes) from a terminal, press a few keys,
including "o", and look at what is printed in the terminal. If you see
xev recognising the lowercase o as truly lowercase, then it's probably
not a problem directly related to X. If it still is uppercase in xev,
you might want to do some other checks. I'm not particularly
knowledgeable in this area, just thought xev might help you. :)
