I contacted skype about this.. but of course they didn't properly read
what I said. Ah well.. at least they replied. See their reply and my
original message below.

Skype freezes ubuntu 6.10 completely, but for about one or two minutes,
after which there is an error message in skype and then normal function
returns.

It seems that some other process is using ALSA (?) but what? and
shouldn't ALSA be able to handle several processes?

Does anyone else have a solution to this problem? It happens on a
frequent but irregular basis.. enough to be embarrassing when I tell
people how wonderful linux is.

thanks..

David.

Hello david,

Thank you for contacting Skype Support.

A very common reason for Skype to "freeze" is a busy sound device.
The symptoms are: when calling someone Skype permanently displays
"Connecting..." but nothing else happens. Hiding the main window
make Skype unavailable; choosing file->close makes Skye freeze completely.

To get out of this, either kill all Skype processes, or the
processes that are using your sound-card.

In my case, I believe there is a bug, but not in Skype: it seems
the Linux kernel (well, a driver in fact) is locking the system

Best regards,

Olga Z.

Ubuntu 6.10 Skype 1.3.0-53
If I don\'t use skype for a while, it will often freeze when I click on call
(green telephone)
After about one to two minutes it unfreezes with a internal error #1002
After that, I can use skype normally.
The freeze effects all computer functions as far as I can tell.
I\'m using a logitech usb headset
