I have played with Lilo more than Grub, but not booting of a usb, my
suggestion would be to try the following
1) modify /etc/lilo.conf on the usb stick to offer an additional option
on the boot up menu
2) run lilo
then try rebooting of the usb

should mention that you probably also need to include any other options
in your existing lilo bootfile - ie other operating systems..
