on the 'old' server, I had all php includes on a separate path (and, a
modified php include path to match):
/home/php/dommain.tld
with the web root like:
/home/domain.tld/www

just thinking, is there really any benefit in having php includes outside
of the web root...?

One reason I have heard is to have DB passwords outside the web root, just in case permissions go all weird and are being openly displayed on the interweb.
